"We need to value New London’s diversity, history, geography and culture as resources that can enhance our children’s learning. Likewise, our educational system can benefit the community-at-large by sharing its resources, and by reminding us of our responsibility to future generations."

Biography

Since moving here in 1994, I have plunged headlong into the life of New London, seeing perhaps a natural progression from my childhood in a Philadelphia rowhouse and my young adulthood as a member of a bilingual Hebrew-English kibbutz community.

I have worked in early childhood education for two decades and been an advocate for children, parents and educators; these activities earned me the CT Association of Young Children, 2001 Outstanding Achievement Award.

I have advocated for the preservation of New London's established neighborhoods and historic buildings, fueled by a lifelong appreciation of the essential role of community in supporting children's development. I am a founding member and secretary of the Thames Hilltop Neighborhood Association.

I am a member of the SECT Peace & Justice Network, Peace Education Task Force.

I will work to:

Close the readiness gap by investing in early education and supporting parents in their role as their children's first teacher.

Create a transparent and participatory school budget process, in which the Board of Education, Superintendent, parents and taxpayers are empowered to work together to set goals and allocate funds.

Cultivate environmental responsibility by building new schools to LEED standards and incorporating the 3 R's of 'reduce, reuse, recycle' into the curriculum at all levels.

Welcome parents' and community involvement in supporting children's education by expanding opportunities for volunteering and opening up school facilities to benefit the community-at-large.
